I have been a diabetic for close to thirty years, and I know the dangers of ignoring the warning signs of diabetes. I thought it would be helpful to you if I briefly introduced you to several of these diabetes warning signs and give resource links to help the reader find additional information. In my case I was showing signs years before I was diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. This caused several complications in my health most of which are still problems for me.  My sugar has been under control for several years, but I wish I would have acted sooner!  Read this hub, and if you have any of the listed symptoms, get checked!

I hope you enjoy this hub, and be encouraged because your diabetes can be controlled!

What is diabetes?

abetes is endocrine disorder where your body (the pancreas) either does not produce enough insulin or the cells of your body resist using the insulin the pancreas does produce.

Diabetes is a problem with the metabolism in the body. Our bodies use digested food for growth and energy. Nearly all of the things we eat is broken down into glucose (the term for sugar in the blood). Glucose is the foremost supply of fuel for the body. Following digestion, the sugar passes into the bloodstream, where it is taken by cells for development and energy. Insulin is what allows the sugar to enter the cells, and this hormone is formed by the pancreas, a large gland at the back of the stomach.

While, and after, we eat, the pancreas automatically distributes the right amount of insulin to move glucose from blood into our cells. In folks suffering with diabetes, however, the body either produces too little or no insulin, or the cells do not react properly to the insulin that is created. Sugar levels build up in the blood, and eventually passes out through the urine. This means the body loses its chief supply of fuel even while the blood contains big amounts of glucose.
