How to can dill pickles

If you like dill pickles like I do, you will enjoy this old recipe and canning tips from my mother. My mom’s dill pickles are a regular, popular, delicious favorite at all types of social activities. She has given this recipe to dozens of church and family folks over the years. I thought my hub readers might like this contribution by her.

Hope you enjoy,

My Mama’s old-fashioned Dill Pickle Recipe

How to Dill Pickles

  • Alum size of small pea
  • 1 garlic bulb
  • 1 sprig of dill

Place these three ingredients in the bottom of a canning jar.

Pack the jar with cucumbers. Small pickles work best.

  • 1cup non-iodized salt
  • 1 qt. vinegar (5% solution

Heat together 1c non-iodized salt and 1 qt. vinegar (5% solution) until it comes to a systematic boil.

Pour vinegar mixture over cucumbers. Seal right away with new lids and turn upside down and cover jar with a towel.

If jars do not seal, transfer vinegar again into pot, boil again and repeat sealing procedure until jars do seal.

Place in a dark place or enclose with towel and do not open for 6 weeks.

These look gorgeous! Thanks for sharing the recipe. An Mama Ruby looks lovely too!

Is the non-iodised salt necessary. We can only get iodised salt here. Does it make a difference to the taste or the process?

Thanks Tony,

I called mom, and she said only use non-iodized salt. Taste and texture of the pickles is influenced. Just try to find "canning salt" from the grocery.

Thanks for the visit.
