Warning Signs Diabetes: Be Aware
I’ve been a diabetic for nearly 30 years, and, for the last several of these I have been diligent in my personal blood sugar control. I check my glucose levels several times daily and my medical check-ups reflect that. I still hope to live a long life. This is my story! I discuss the warning signs of diabetes and its onset condition called pre-diabetes; diabetes has several subtle onset warning signs which I will enumerate later in this hub. When I was first diagnosed, I noticed some of these pre-diabetic symptoms and, although I felt good, I believed something was wrong in my body. My doctor checked my blood sugar levels. Blood sugar levels is the measure of the dilution of glucose in the blood. It is measured in milligrams per decaliter of blood (Mg/Dl and should read between 70-140). My reading was obviously high so he prescribed pill medication, exercise and diet. Guess what? Within two/three months my diabetic symptoms were gone! He bragged on me and allowed me to drop my medicine; I was healed! No! No, I wasn’t. With false confidence I proceeded and slowly become more lax in my diet. I felt good and the diabetes symptoms were so subtle I kept ignoring them. I even neglected going regularly to a doctor and in doing so set myself up for lifelong complications. My wake-up call came when I stepped on some small nails and the foot infection that followed would not heal. I was in my early 40’s and had to have a toe amputated. Then, over the following few years, a series of maladies hit all caused by diabetes. Within this time span, I had a stroke and kidney failure. I am glad to report that now things for me are doing much better. I am a kidney transplant patient; I watch my sugar levels religiously, exercise daily and see my doctors like clockwork. I have taken many diabetic classes, opened a personal website on diabetes where I have gathered meaningful information for myself and others (I will give the links later). I have become somewhat of an expert on diabetes and its complications through the “school of hard knocks!” However, I can’t help but grieve the fact that I was so stupid and mule-headed. I would trade my degree of bad experience for common sense any time!Pre-Diabetes - What is diabetes
Warning Signs Diabetes – Don’t be fooled!
- Persistent Thirst This was the sign that I first noticed in my own diabetes Mellitus. I should have gone to a physician right away, but I did not. Don't be imprudent. Your thirst may well be a signal of diabetes. Your body is pulling extra water out of your blood and you're becoming dried out and feel the need to drink more to reinstate the water.
- Frequent trips to the bathroom Urination becomes more repeated when there is too much sugar in the blood. If insulin is nonexistent or ineffective, the kidneys can't filter enough glucose back to the blood. They have to draw extra water out of the blood to reduce the sugar concentration. This keeps your bladder packed, and it keeps you running to the bathroom.
- Weight Loss This symptom is more noticeable with Type 1 diabetes. In Type 1, the body often attacks the insulin producing cells. The body looks for an energy source because the cells aren't getting glucose. It starts to break down muscle tissue and fat for energy. However, it also affects type 2 with gradually increasing insulin resistance. Type 2 diabetes is caused by the body becoming insulin resistant and cannot use the insulin produced. It is possible to have symptoms of both types.
- Weakness and Fatigue It's all about those sugar levels! Glucose from our food we eat moves into the bloodstream where insulin transfers it into the cells of our body. The cells use it to manufacture the energy we need to live. Without insulin you feel listless. Or, if the cells resist insulin, then the glucose stays outside the cells in the bloodstream. The cells become vigor starved, drained and run down.
- Tingling or Numbness in Your Hands, Legs or Feet This is also called neuropathy, and it occurs gradually over time as consistent high glucose in the blood damages the nervous system, especially in the feet and hands. Type 2 diabetes is a measured onset, and people are often not attentive that they have it. Therefore, blood sugar might be high for more than a few years before a diagnosis is made. (This is what happened to me!) Nerve damage creeps up devoid of our awareness. Neuropathy can very often improve when tighter blood glucose control is achieved.
These five above are only the major warning signs but there are also many other. For examples, blurred vision, dry, itchy skin, frequent cuts and bruises that take a long time to heal. If you see any of the above signs, contact your doctor. He or she will be able to tell you if you have reason to be concerned about a diagnosis of diabetes.

This is indeed a great hub. Very helpful, very informative. Thank you for sharing it.
I too am a diabetic, exercise, exercise, exercise really helps with this disease!!! It keeps your blood sugar down and your weight! My doctor told me to exercise and at first I didn't listen, now I go 3-4 times a week! WOW! What a differences! Even if it's just a little exercise a week, it's better than none! GREAT HUB!!!!!
Wbisbill,
Thank you for this very wonderful informative hub! We have a (9) year old grand daughter with Type I diabetes. I have learned much to properly take care of her whenever she is in our care. It has made me just that much more aware of diet, exercise and nutrition. Again wonderful hub!
Thank you for sharing!
Blessings!
I went to the doctors today to get my thyroid checked (blood work). He said that my blood sugar is 57 and that I must be hungry, I told him that I had ate oatmeal 2hrs earlier then my husband brought home some mcdonalds sausage egg and cheese bisquit and a couple sips of soda 30min before getting my blood taken. He couldnt believe it, which scares me. I dont understand how this could happen I am 26yr old that weighs 127lb and I usually eat well. I have twin 5yr olds and a 8mo old baby, but I never had preggers diabeties. My doctor told me to change my eating habits, but I thought I ate pretty healthy. Do you think maybe that the test could have been wrong, or should I get more testing, because I am freaking out I already have to take meds everyday for my under active thyroid?
Kim, I am not a doctor. But some people have trouble with persistent low sugar readings. I have some friends that can eat big and still have low sugar. Stay in touch with your Dr..
My prayers are with you!
This is a great hub. I am sure this will help many people. Best wishes to you.
Diabetes 2 -treatment
Diabetes 2 is now reclassified as an Autoimmune disease.
See article below
http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/222766.ph
It means there are antibodies to Insulin.
Insulin resistance is also part of the problem with antibodies to insulin. The insulin is there but the antibodies bind to it and it is not free to act as insulin. Even when more insulin is produced, again the antibodies bind to the extra insulin. It is therefore important to remove these Insulin antibodies.
Oral Tolerance (O.T.) is the most successful way of treating Diabetes 2 & various autoimmune diseases.
View link to understand better. http://www.suite101.com/content/oral-tolerance-the
And the most important part is O.T. is successful in animal trials of autoimmune diseases.
View link for Success in Animals trials below: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cac/Ling-Shao/2009/07/12/treatment-of-disease-through-oral-tolerance/+oral+tolerance+animal+successfully&cd=4&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=ca&source=www.google.ca
But it has not been successful in human trials.
However if ALL OF THE FACTORS in the animal trials were duplicated in human trials then we will have success too. The reason animal trials were positive is because in most cases the animals wereyoung - their immune systems were producing good amounts of themissing factor - CD80/CD86. The suppressor T cells - ourattention should be on this cell because it is responsible for lowering antibodies (immunoglobin G) and can bring total healing & cure.
The Reserch by Dr. Polly Matzinger explains this best :
The T cell needs 2 factors or signals for full activation.
1.) a peptide similar to INsulin - a tiny dose 1 mg. this primes or makes ready theT cell. But without the 2nd signal the T cell remains in anergy( no activity).
2.) the Second signal - is CD80 or CD86 - either one is enough to make the Tcell go thru the changes that makes it a fully activated cell.It is the Second Signal where Modern medicine has not progressed further & failed. CD80 and CD86 are factors found in the blood.
Many Blood Factors and their production are increased by Herbs;
For EXAMPLE:
1.) VEGF(Vascular endothelial Growth Factor) - expression increased by Chinese herb Angelica sinensis.
2.) Interferon-G - expression induced by Astragalus membraneous root, licorice and some extracts from certain beans.
3.) Tumor necrosis factor- alpha - production increased by Coptis herb
4.) INterleukin-2 - expression increased by Goji berries.
The important fact is CD80 And/or CD86 which are the missing ingredientscan be induced by Herbs.CD80 production is possible thru the use of plants &/or mushrooms.
Examples:
1.) Agaricus bisporus - can induce CD80 . Agaricus bisporus is the white Button mushroom or champignon mushroom found in most U.S. and Canadian supermarkets.
see article http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18287364
2.) Goji berry known as Lycium barbarum - juice and extracts induces CD80- available from most Food supplement stores & the internet
See article http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19170138
The above 2 examples are proof that the solution is Oral Tolerance and herbs.
Modern Research has a handicap - all Modern Research have partnered with Drug Companies and Drug makers policy will not test Herbs because herbs can not be patented. If they spend millions on tests, anyone can buy the herbs and
go without the drugs.
Lux Research - a division of Lux Health Resources has done the research.
The herbs take only 4 days of for each course of treatment followed by 15 days of
transition - meaning the body makes the necessary changes.
For mild cases 2 - 3 courses -.
For moderate cases - about 4 to 6 courses.
For severe cases - 7 to 8 courses of treatment.
Lux Research is doing trials now.
If you are interested in being included in trials, you will not be charged for the remedy.
This is a win-win situation, you get the cure and we get MORE proof that can be presented to the medical community and the world.
We will be writing an article on this trial and publish it in a Health , Medical Treatment and/or Research Journal.
For Diabetes Type 1, the treatment is similar however the antigen insulin is changed to GAD(glutamic acid decarboxylase) which is the target protein in
beta cells islets of langerhans-Pancreas.
We don't have this at this time, but if we can get it
then that cure will be available.

Chinese herbs have many wonderful healing benefits. As a Doctor of Chinese medicine I reccommend that it can be dangerous to experiment with herbs on your own and you should go to an herbalist who have trained to know combinations with western medication that can be helpful or harmful and someone licensed with the state in herbs not just acupuncture . Check out your states acupuncture colleges they usually do low cost herbs and acupuncture treatments . As a low cost tip.
